Additional Information

Location:

We are planning to shoot the majority of the film in a park near a team member's home. Here we will have our establishing shot, and characters introduced. This will allow for our storyline to be understood by the audience and flow better. Later, the scenes will be shot in our main character's neighborhood and then their house. This will help wrap up the story and give the audience an ending they can understand.

Participants:

Three members of our group are going to be included in the film. Kai is going to be our director and filming. Willow is going to play the main character of the stalker. While Lucy will play the secondary character of the girl being stalked. Our last remaining member will be focusing on needed background characters and editing.

Schedule:

3/7/22: Our group established props, costumes, makeup, and location

3/10/22: Our group will have started filming our production

3/14/22: Our group will have shot the first 10 slides of the film

3/17/22: Our group will have shot 10 slides of the film

3/28/22: Our group will have shot the last 10 slides of the film

3/31/22: Our group will have finished editing and final touches

Health:

Due to Covid-19, we all will wear masks for the duration of

filming. Only the characters being filmed will take off their masks. Regarding the location, it is near one of the member's houses and has a safe history. If one of our members were to get sick, we will continue filming the scenes they are not in until they feel better.

Backup Plan:

If our park plan does not work out, we will go to a beach area. It will allow the story to still make sense. If we can not film in our main character’s neighborhood, we can switch to another one of our group member's houses. If a member is absent or unavailable, we will either film the scenes they are not in or begin the editing process.

Title Research: The Game

How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences of the film? Which ones?

Four titles are shown back to back, transitioning to one another by breaking into puzzles pieces then rebuilding themselves. These three titles are the entertainment company "polygram." Next to being  "Polygram Filmed Entertainment Presents" to "a Propaganda Film Production." Ending with the show's title name "The game."

What connations do the images carry out?

The series of old, flashback, malfunctioning images give us a brief look into a family's history. Showing all of the private moments and family gatherings. A piano plays throughout the series of images, adding an uneasiness. What is supposed to be a nostalgic look into a family's past is tainted with an eerie and strange tone. Ultimately giving it a peculiar, negative connotation.

How is the genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset?

Its symbolic codes are mainly shown in the character's actions. Though this sequence is supposed to seem positive and a look back in time. The characters are seen acting happy in many of the scenes, but an image of aggression, anger or violence is thrown in multiple times to interrupt the happiness. Even when the character's faces show a smile, their body language is one of annoyance, such as a clenched jaw, narrowed eyebrows, or intense eye contact. The body contact between characters is uncomfortable for one of the characters. One scene shows a baby being passed to his brother, once in his arms the baby begins to cry and kick. Another one is a wife and husband hand in hand, only for the husband seen trying to leave and looking for others to talk to. Technical codes are malfunctions, glitches, and pauses during the sequences. While the series of videos are playing the back, black spots and lines are constantly glitching over it. In some scenes, the videos glitch out of shot for a couple seconds. All of these codes reinforce its thriller genre.

What conventions are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

The main one would be the whole amount of forest in the background of almost every scene. It foreshadows and provides a place to hide/isolate when the violence begins to happen. Quick cuts from scene to scene, providing no elaboration for any characters/events. There is piano music playing in the background, although it seems to be calming, it's not suited for the scenes shown and ultimately comes off creepy. All of these chilling conventions appeal to their target audience.

Title Research: Buried

1. How many titles are displayed during the opening sequence of the film? Which ones?

The opening sequence provides many titles from all departments. It starts off by presenting the production team, which happens to be "A verse entertainment" in association with "The Safran company" and "dark trick Films". It then proceeds to show the main character's actor and all the components of the production team. This happens to be people such as the editing, sound, makeup, and visual effects professions. The names were listed in a way to represent roots in the soil further showcasing the theme of being buried.

2. What connotations do the images carry? (how do they make you feel?)

The images that are carried throughout the opening sequence revolved around going further and further underground. The titles were presented at a time which later would later go off-screen to show us going deeper underground. The background was made from dirt which allowed you to sense what the movie could be about. The general plot can be inferred from the background alone if you hadn't seen the title or summary page. Towards the end of the opening, we see the lines creating boxes to show money on the screen and a clock. Without having a summary, you can feel a sort of mystery to this movie. The audience would want to try and already predict what the journey the main character would have to go through.

3. How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset? (can you tell what genre the film is?)

Symbolic codes reinforce the genre of thriller by adding elements of a mystery to the opening. Quick makeups of money, a clock, and a large tower allow the audience to guess what they're about to watch and allow some to guess incorrectly and be excited to find out. Without seeing a summary of the movie someone can sense that this movie will deal with topics like being buried. They will be watching and at the edge of their seat to know if the main character is being buried or if they are doing the action? If they are being threatened, then why?

4. What conventions are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

One main convention to ensure the appeal is the element of surprise and an overall creepy feeling that any thriller fanatic would be targeted. The constant foreshadowing of the act of being buried will make the audience want to stay throughout the whole movie to see how it plays out. Makes them want to see what the plot is and how the main character interacts with the situation and tries to solve it.

Title Design Websites

The first website I decided to research was www.artofthetitle.com. At first, I was researching for a website that would have examples of opening sequences to help give an idea as to what I am supposed to do. While searching for credible websites I came across www.artofthetitle.com. They provide several opening sequence examples that would fit well for various genres.  Not only that they provide lists of graphic designers and studios as to where these opening sequences were used. With this large arrangement of opening sequences, this website has the pleasure of proving title design sequences for Emmy nominated films like " The Queens Gambit". They also provide news to information in the film industry and stylistic changes that have been made. The large sum of the title design sequences allows this website to be a great example of what a proper opening sequence should look like. Making sure our title design is professional and not sloppy is a priority of mine. This website is great to use as a reference.

Using one website as a reference will not be beneficial to the growth of our film. Allow the prior website acknowledges is very credible having a fresh set of examples is great. The next website researched was https://www.watchthetitles.com. This website has very contrasting qualities to the prior website. This movie has title design sequences of student films, video games, music videos, and more. This large arrangement of different types of film can change our perspective and what looks best stylistically. They also provide interviews of well-known filmmakers and professionals in the film industry. This educational outlet is good for us as a team. In addition to the title design sequence examples provided, they are very high quality. They look quite professional and not basic. This is essential since catching the attention of the viewer is important for films in the thriller genre.

Title Research: Red Lights

How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences of the film? Which ones?

When watching the opening for Splice the placement of the titles was the more surprising thing. The beginning is shown and the audience is taken to the part of the cell but before the production team "a Copperheart Entertainment/Gaumont production" was shown. Then titles begin, showing the film director than the actors back to back. While we move through the body more names are shown from departments like editing, casting, visual effects, and creations.

What conations do the images carry out?

The scene is set inside a creature created by combining two different creatures' DNAs, our background is that creature. We are surrounded by cells and our body's natural liquids. This makes you feel grossed out so much you want to keep watching. The audience just wants to see how this thing came to be. And how the characters are going to deal with this newfound

thing.

How is the genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset?

The numerous technical codes such as quick jump cuts, movement of the camera to dig deeper into the body and the background noises help reinforce the genre of thriller. Adding those elements boost the eerie level. Not knowing how the combination of the DNA is a mystery all on its own and the audience will want to see how it goes. Not knowing how the particles reacted to each other and what's going to happen next. In some scenes, the videos glitch out of shot for a couple seconds. All of these codes reinforce its thriller genre.

What conventions are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

The audience will be targeted by the appeal of suspense. Once that element is added to the movie, the fans of that subgenre will follow. The main one would be the whole time we are inside of a body and with the same background in every scene. It foreshadows and provides a place the movie begins to happen. Quick cuts from scene to scene (organ part to part) provide no elaboration for any events. There is piano music playing in the background, although it seems to be calming, it's not suited for the scenes shown and ultimately comes off as eerie. All of these are common conventions to appeal to its target audience.

Title Research: Cortex

 1. How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences of the film? Which ones?

The opening sequence starts with the editing team showcasing the main actors with little white dots all around the background. It then shows the film director in the words of "a Rodrigo Cortex FIlm". The title of the film is then shown and then the cast list continued. After all the actors are named, the titles of the production team are recognized. People like the costume designer, editor, special effects, and production are named.

2. What connations do the images carry out? (how do they make you feel?"

The film opens with a black background with almost flashing lights as the main characters are named. Images of old polaroids of different bodies, skulls, and many pictures and statues of Jesus. The opening also includes many different types of ancient texts. Later in the opening, you see newspapers claiming to have seen a UFO and this gives a shock factor, leaving you wanting more. The newspaper, along with a landing spaceship gives you a sense of wonder.

3. How is the genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset?

The genre is reinforced by the multiple God-like symbols using rosery and pictures of Jesus. The background images of X-rays, mathematical equations, and old pictures of what seemed to be dead people show off a very creepy theme.  This may allow the audience to try and guess what the movie will be about after sensing the genre. The numerous pictures of blueprints and ancient writing give an uncanny feeling. As stated before, evidence of a UFO sighting was acknowledged. Technical codes such as glitches throughout the opening allow for an eerie effect. The use of blurred light streaks, swipes of white and grey, the fading in and out, the lights growing larger and larger till it's just white. Then you see a hand reaching from the darkness.

4. What conventions are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

The amount of foreshadowing with the use of newspaper articles and images of past people allows for the mystery of what happens to stay alive. The audience will be taken through by the character. With only the opening sequence, you're only taken to a dark cellar and are told it holds secrets, it is up to the movie to connect the dots and the audience will be appealed to that aspect.

Genre Research: Lucy

The movie researched was "Lucy". This can be viewed on Prime video.

The progression from ignorance and prediction about human life to conscious modern growth is depicted cinematically with the use of camera angles and movements. The film depicts the symbolism of human evolution in the scene where Lucy is kidnapped. The camera gets an extremely close image of Lucy after she is kidnapped by a bunch of drug traffickers to illustrate the intimidation she faces through her crying eyes. After a few seconds, the camera captures a low shot of one of the drug-peddlers, demonstrating his authority over Lucy. In a fit of rage, he kicks her in the stomach so hard that the CPH4 packets begin to leak into her body. Images from within her body and outside transition were exhibited simultaneously to track the physiologic response to this dose of CPH4. Following then, the audience's interest in this change is reflected in numerous camera angles that shine a light on this unassuming individual. Through the low camera shot in the last shot, the camera stares at Lucy from four various camera angles, gradually drawing closer to her invisibly and signaling the dominant position that she would play soon. The camera takes a low shot at Lucy demonstrating her authority over her abductor and human-proposed scientific hypotheses, especially in this scene.

Regarding the mis-en-scene, Lucy is studying in Taipei, Taiwan, and is tricked into working as a drug mule by her new boyfriend Richard for a South Korean drug lord. She is captured later on in the movie and a bag of drugs is forcibly sewn into her abdomen to transport the drug to Europe. The setting changes from Tawain to Europe because of this and we follow alongside her journey. Lucy has an extensive dialogue with those who kidnapped her because she wants answers about the drug. Lucy wears casual attire throughout the movie while those who kidnapped her seem to be wearing fancier clothes. The lighting of the movie is bright at the beginning but turns dark as Lucy encounters more issues.

Throughout the movie, there is a lot of Diegetic and Non-Diegetic sound. When Lucy uses her martial arts skill to fight, the non-diegetic sound is used. There is a great deal of horrifying hitting, which adds to the suspense. Sound has a significant impact on defining the theme in this film since it creates a distinct mood for each scene, which is enhanced by the usage of synthesizers and electronic sound effects. To help characterize the film, a large number of very realistic sound effects are used. The sound directors stated that the most challenging scenes were "those where the images follow a drug traveling through Lucy's brain." They used people talking and sounds heard earlier in the film to mimic a notion that we are passing through her memories.

Genre Research: The Shallows

The first movie research was The Shallows.

In regards to the varying camera angles and camera movements. The movie starts with an establishing shot at the beach, making the main character look insignificant to the huge ocean in front of her. For multiple scenes, a birds-eye view is used to show the main character, the shark, and her unfavorable surroundings. After the birds-eye view, we are given a close-up of the main character, and what she is planning on doing. Many low angles are used when the main character is in the water, giving the audience a POV shot of the shark below her. Tracking shots are commonly occurring when the main character is surfing, suspensefully leading up to the moments before the shark attacks her. Throughout the film, the main character is the center of a pan shot, to show what her emotions and options are for getting away from the shark. All of these angles and movements helped to add suspense and distress to the movie, and will likely be implemented in our film.

Regarding the Mis-en-scene of the film, it was narrow and less demanding since the surroundings and characters don't change. The characters have limited interaction with each other with surface-level dialogue to help push the plot. All of the background actors were in beach attire, as well as the main character who had a bathing suit along with a surfboard. The lighting of the movie was bright and colorful for the beginning of the movie. It switched to a grey and almost rainy setting when the shark attacked the main character.

The sound isn't predominant in the film, eerie instrumentals are only used for a small amount to help build up suspense before the shark tried to attack. Ringing and flat line noise is used when the character is under stress or falls into the water. Basic sounds of the beach such as waves crushing are included. An emphasis is placed on the main character's dialogue as the music is rarely playing while she is talking.

Genre Research: Bird Box

This movie is called Bird Box. This movie can be watched on Netflix.

The camera angles and movements in thriller movies seem to be similar so we highlighted the important ones that added the thriller to the movie. One of the directors mentions that her favorite shot to use throughout the film was close-ups. She states that she wants viewers to “understand what’s going on in those eyes and cultivate it.” An important scene in the movie is the speech to the children, where an extreme close-up that ultimately ends up in a behind-the-shoulder shot is used. During the speech, viewers are confused as to why Sandra is so paranoid and as the close-up of her turns into a behind-the-shoulder shot we see that she is talking to children which intrigues the viewers even more. Tracking shots are predominantly used because we are watching the actors navigate the town and trying to escape simultaneously. We follow the actors and witness firsthand how they get through the obstacles presented in the settings they are in. It is a key factor that helps add to the suspense because it makes viewers feel as if they are traveling alongside them. These were two of the most used shots in the movie which my group will definitely incorporate into our final project.

For the mis-en-scene, the main part of every character’s costume/outfit was the blindfolds that they wore to protect themselves from the entities around them. The main character Malorie Hayes wears a knife loop, which is a significant prop for her costume. In the movie, Malorie is constantly trying to survive from the dark entity, and so this knife loop symbolizes her efforts of protecting her children. This movie takes place in Northern California, surrounded by a forest and river which add to the isolated effect that the movie tries to portray due to the high suicide rates. The characters are all worried and trying to survive these entities so they are distrustful towards each other because they have become paranoid.

The film follows the character Malorie Hayes,  as she tries to protect herself and two children from entities that cause people who look at them to die by suicide. The sounds commonly heard throughout the movie were whispering and monster noises. The whispering creates an eery feel because the purpose of these whispers was to get into the victim’s head and convince them to kill themself. The supervisor sound/editors talk about the process for making the monster noises and inform viewers that it was a combination of things. The movement of the creatures was the sound of a swarm of bees because the editors wanted the characters to “feel that they were moving around us, like a constant threat that was surrounding us.” The sounds editors emphasized the idea that the whispers could be in time and flow together to heighten the creepiness as well as support the feeling that they surrounded characters by their presence at all times. We can definitely do something similar to the whispers because it was a really important aspect of the movie that made things more suspenseful and creepy. Movie

Genre Decision Blog

While researching various blogs informative details of each genre were discovered. We learned thrillers are often confused with horror main goal is to capture the gaze of the audience. To keep them interested and wanting more the climax is usually the main confrontation. It is most useless closeups and high or low angle shots to show the director's representation. Its use of pacing in thriller films is essential since it can drastically change the mood of a scene. The genre romance can be summarized as a journey following two characters through their lives and with each other. Most have a very happy ending, leaving the characters together and meeting their goal but that isn’t always the case. Romance films, mainly use color contrasting. Color contrasting can be set by sunsets or the use of candles bring an affectionate atmosphere to the film. When researching the genre of comedy, the challenge set for itself. With the numerous movies in this genre, it was difficult to see which technics were used throughout the movies. The use of flashbacks to build characters was a repeating theme. Non-diegetic sounds are often left in the films to give the audience their reactions to outside things.

After considering the several unique aspects each genre has our team has agreed on our genre being Thriller. This genre would work best with the concept of our opening sequence. After extensive research, I now know what editing, camera angles, and camera movements would be best for a thriller film. The research done for this genre will help create an authentic but professional film in the thriller genre. Our opening sequence will prioritize lighting, sound, and timing. Mostly we will use lowlight to make things looks more dim, mysterious, and scary. Regardless of researching other genres, our group felt the thriller genre would be best and I wholeheartedly agree.

Genre Research : Romance

When researching a movie genre there are many things to take note of. A romance film can be defined as a romantic love story that focuses on the affectionate romantic involvement of the main characters and the journey that their love takes through dating, courtship, or marriage.

Looking from a Romance film perspective, we can see how the camera angles and lighting would differ from other genres.

Famous directors when shooting this type of film would prioritize the main love interest over another side character in a sense. Common camera angles used are extreme long shots, to describe what is going to happen next, and various amounts of tracking shots. They are many medium-long shots to zoom in on the love interest to portray beauty and allow you to fall in love with the character as well. The use of medium shots generally shows the character from the waist to the top of the head. It enables the viewer to see facial expressions in combination with body language and to show emotion.

Lighting is very important for a romance movie and does a lot for the effect. Directors would use a warm sort of red lighting to insinuate intimacy and comfort with the characters. The warm lighting can be done by string light, lamps or candles Another way to have a contrast in color is with sunsets like in the Titanic, one of the most famous romance movies to be made. Most often, warm colors add to an inviting, romantic atmosphere.

The editing concept of romance ascertained that many rom-coms mainly use two different types of editing techniques. Crosscuts are often used to establish a certain action happening between two different locations. Another editing shot used is straight cuts are used to keep continuity in the story so it flows nicely. Something we will be using in our opening sequence is the effect you do when blurring out the background characters.

After talking with my group about this genre we came up with some aspects we both enjoy in this genre and what we don't. We love that romance films usually just focus on the two main characters. We also like the use of backstories and flashbacks when talking about the main characters. Since this final task is only the first two minutes of a short film we decided not to do a flashback but our camera angles will be focused only on the main characters.

Genre Research: Comedy

When researching a widely used genre with many different interpretations can be hard. Comedies are light-hearted dramas, crafted to amuse, entertain the audience, and provoke enjoyment. The comedy genre humorously exaggerates the situation, the language, action, and characters.

The comedy itself has a list of more than a million movies, and then you would have to indicate which ones mix genres. Many movies like Scary movie have aspects of horror while being comedy movies based on a definition standpoint. This is something we want to stay away from when creating our film.

Numerous camera angles are used to produce this type of film, most commonly the wide and close shot. The tactic of using wide angles allows that determines your scene's location. These types of camera angles remind us where the characters physically are. Another camera angle often used is a low angle which we will be also be adapting for our opening. The angle has been used to show people that have fallen or the sky view from below. This will be used as an introductory shot for a presumable powerful person.

Sound and its use are very important for a comedic movie. Besides the already funny dialogue, added sound effects for dramatic effects.

Sound like a character's speech, the roar of a speeding car, or the clapping of "an invisible" audience can be edited in, diegetic sound to be heard and not necessarily shown on screen. We will be using this technique for when we edit later on.

Researching movies like Superbad and Grown-ups, we found various things we like and didn't. In both movies, the opening sequence is an array of pictures and videos of the characters at younger ages to portray the relationship between characters.

Genre Research: Thriller

Thriller is a genre that focuses on catching the audience's attention by inflicting suspense or anticipation. A commonly confused with the genre horror, the thriller genre is drastically different. While Horror focuses on scaring the audience and prioritizes the main confrontation as the climax thriller does otherwise. In the Thriller Genre, its main goal is to leave tension and leave the audience on edge.

There are many camera angles used in the thriller genre. For example, the most common filming angles are closeups or extreme closeups, low and high angle shots, canted angle shots, wide shots, and more. What is en scene is used can drastically change a film. In thrillers typically low-level lighting, props, and little to no makeup are essential. This is to make the film more believable for the audience. To pair with believability and to add emotion when editing thriller films pacing is key. Knowing the right moment to use fast or slow pacing can change the feel of a scene. Recent thriller films that implement this concept are "Run", "Old", and " Unhinged". Elements of the thriller genre that I like is its ability to keep the audience invested. The skill of attracting the gaze of the audience and getting their full attention. There use of lighting is very important and I would use this for future films. Personally, an element that doesn't appeal to me is pace timing. When and where you use fast or slow pacing can drastically change the scene. It can also affect the audience's understanding of the film. There have been times pacing has been an issue in thriller movies causing their rating to be bad.

Our Pitch

A girl is one of few to survive the zombie apocalypse. She runs into another non-infected human and they have to get through together. Our first pitch is unique from the commonly chosen ideas. It would help in showing off creativity and originality. While also providing a well-thought-out and evolved finished project. Although the mise-en-scene would be difficult to accomplish for any of the scenes. Zombie make-up and attire would have to research, bought, and learned. Plus the fact that none of us leave in an area that would suit this project whether that be a woods or generally dark area. It emphasizes the idea that this girl is one of the few, which would force us to need backup actors to play the zombies. Not only would we have to find multiple actors for only a few scenes, but we would also have to work around their schedule and pay extra supplies for their make-up and costume. A girl has been living her day-to-day alone, or so she thinks. Our second pitch is about from stalker's point of view. It isn’t demanding in regards to makeup, costume, or setting which will make it easy to create. The roles are flexible and can modify without changing the plot/sequence. The recording and editing can be experimented with. Whether that be by making many of the scenes from a POV shot; or formatting it in a found footage way. Our selection is wider because it wouldn’t affect our initial idea. Although stalker-involved projects are no novel idea. We can make it personal and unique in an engaging way. Ultimately, we ended up choosing our second pitch “ A girl has been living her day-to-day alone, or so she thinks.”
